Can I learn a language from zero by speaking it?
Starting a new language from scratch? Are speaking lessons right for total beginners? Honest answers for adults starting from zero.
When people hear "speaking lessons", they often picture students who already know a bit and can chat a little. But what if you don't know a single word? If you're starting German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese or any other language from zero, can you really learn by speaking?
Short answer: yes. For beginners, speaking is actually the most natural place to start.
How did we learn our first language?
We didn't learn our mother tongue from a grammar book. First we heard it, then we spoke in single words, then short sentences. Adults do learn differently from children: understanding the rules helps us. But the order is the same: understand and say first, rules after.
What happens in a first lesson?
For a total beginner, a speaking lesson doesn't mean long conversations. In the first lessons you:
- learn to greet people and introduce yourself;
- pick up short, very common phrases: "I'd like…", "Where is…?", "Sorry, could you say that again?";
- and listen to and repeat the sounds.
By the end of your first lesson you'll have said a few sentences in the new language. That small win is the best motivation to keep going.
Why one-to-one helps beginners
In a busy class, beginners usually stay quiet. In a one-to-one lesson it's always your turn: your teacher goes at your pace, stops when something isn't clear, and moves on when you're ready. Nobody to feel embarrassed in front of.
