Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world: the official language of more than twenty countries, from Spain to Mexico, Argentina and Colombia. Between series, music, football and travel, more and more people want to learn it.

So is Spanish hard to learn? For most people the answer is a pleasant surprise: no, it's much easier than you might think.

The easy parts of Spanish

  • It's written the way it sounds. Letters are almost always pronounced the same way, so when you see a word you can usually say it.
  • Clear vowels. A, e, i, o, u are short and clear, with far fewer spelling surprises than English.
  • Words you already know. *Problema, hotel, televisión, información, chocolate, música*... Many words can be guessed at first sight.
  • A warm, chatty culture. People in Spanish-speaking countries are usually patient and friendly with someone trying to speak their language.

The parts that take a little work

To be honest, like every language, Spanish has a few things that take time:

  • Verb endings: the verb changes with the person (hablo, hablas, habla...). It's a pattern, and it becomes automatic as you use it.
  • Masculine and feminine words: *el libro* (the book), *la mesa* (the table). Confusing at first, but it settles as you hear it. And if you get it wrong, people still understand you.
  • Fast speech: native speakers talk fast, so it helps to get your ear used to real conversation early.

How to start speaking Spanish

  • Learn to introduce yourself: "Me llamo…" (My name is…), "Soy de…" (I'm from…), "Estoy aprendiendo español" (I'm learning Spanish).
  • Repeat out loud every day. Saying short sentences aloud trains your mouth and your ear.
  • Mix it with what you love. Spanish songs, series or football commentary make learning fun.
  • Talk to a real person. Apps teach words, but you learn conversation by having conversations.

If you have an exam goal, such as DELE, speaking practice makes a big difference in the speaking part too.
