Living in Türkiye and want to speak Turkish? Start here

Moved to Türkiye, or married into a Turkish family? How to go from "merhaba" and "teşekkürler" to real conversations in Turkish.

You can say *merhaba*, *teşekkürler* and *bir çay lütfen*. You understand a few words at the market. But when your neighbour starts chatting, or your partner's family gathers around the table, you smile and nod.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone. Many people living in Türkiye, or with Turkish family, get stuck right here.

Turkish is more logical than it looks

Turkish words can look very long: *görüşmek üzere*, *anlayamadım*, *evlerimizden*. But Turkish is built like Lego. You take a root and add small pieces to the end, and those pieces follow clear rules with very few exceptions.

  • ev = house
  • evler = houses
  • evlerim = my houses
  • evlerimde = in my houses

Once you see the pattern, long words stop being scary.

Good news for learners

  • It's written the way it sounds. Every letter is always pronounced the same way.
  • No articles, no grammatical gender. No "der, die, das" or "le, la" to worry about.
  • People love it when you try. Even a few sentences of Turkish open doors, and smiles.

Start with the Turkish you actually need

  • Shopping, the market, ordering food
  • Small talk with neighbours and colleagues
  • Phone calls, appointments, taxis
  • Family visits: greetings, compliments, and the phrases you'll hear again and again (*Afiyet olsun! Ellerinize sağlık!*)
