How to practise speaking English at home: 7 easy ways
Seven practical ways to practise speaking English even when there's no one to talk to. Start with a few minutes a day.
The only way to get better at speaking is to speak. But what if there's no one around who speaks English? Here are seven simple ways to start at home, on your own.
1. Narrate your day out loud
While you make coffee or cook, say what you're doing in English: "I'm making coffee. I need some milk." Simple sentences, but they get your mouth and brain used to English.
2. Record yourself
Record a one-minute talk on your phone: your day, a film, a plan. Listen back, then record the same topic a week later. Hearing the difference is motivating.
3. Try shadowing
Play a short video or podcast, listen to one sentence and repeat it with the same rhythm. It's a great way to work on pronunciation and fluency.
4. Prepare your everyday sentences
Write 10 sentences you'll use often: introducing yourself, talking about your work, asking for something. Practise them out loud.
5. Learn phrases, not single words
Learn "make a decision" instead of just "decision", "make a mistake" instead of "mistake". You'll build sentences much faster when you speak.
6. Think in English
Try saying small thoughts in English during the day. Note the words you don't know and look them up in the evening.
7. Add a real conversation
Practising alone is valuable, but real progress starts when someone answers you. A real conversation a few times a week gives all the exercises above a purpose.
Start small
You don't need to do everything at once. Pick one today and try it for five minutes. Small regular steps work better than big, irregular efforts.
