Years of English lessons, but you still can't speak? Here's why

You studied English at school for years, yet you freeze when you have to speak. Why this happens, and how to actually start speaking.

You know the grammar rules. You understand words when you read them. But when someone asks you a question in English, your mind goes blank. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone: many adults reach exactly this point after years of English at school.

The good news: the problem is not your ability. It's the way you learned.

Why can't we speak?

1. We memorised instead of speaking. At school, English was often taught like any other subject: rules, gap-fills, tests. Speaking is a skill. Just as you can't learn to ride a bike from a book, you can't learn to speak just by reading.

2. It was rarely your turn. In a crowded classroom, the time each person spends speaking in a lesson is often just a few minutes. Over the years, your total speaking time may be surprisingly small.

3. We are afraid of mistakes. "What if I say it wrong?" is one of the biggest barriers to speaking. While you try to build the perfect sentence, the moment passes.

So what can you do?

  • Put speaking at the centre. Grammar matters, but it sticks much better when you learn it inside conversation, as you need it.
  • Speak a little every day. Short, regular practice beats long sessions now and then.
  • Confidence over perfection. Mistakes are part of learning. Focus on expressing yourself first; accuracy grows with it.
  • Talk to a real person. Apps can teach words, but they can't replace a conversation. With someone who listens and adapts to you, speaking improves much faster.

How we work at Bean

At Bean Learning, speaking is the main aim of every lesson. You have live one-to-one lessons with a real teacher on Google Meet, so every minute of the lesson is your turn to talk. There is no fixed coursebook: your teacher picks the grammar you need from your lessons and adds listening and reading where it helps. Our method is simple: we work on conversation, and we care more about your confidence than perfection.
